In Malaysia, cheques can be written in TamilKuala Lumpur, July 14: The Malaysian Central Bank has said that there is no restriction on writing cheques in Tamil. Abdul Aziz Ahmad, a central bank manager, however, said that banks have the discretion on whether to accept these cheques, based on the availability of staff who can read the language. The move follows complaints by some Indian businessmen that banks have rejected their cheques written in Tamil, according to the New Straits Times. Indians constitute about 10 percent of the country's population. Tamils, Malayalees and Telugu-speaking people make up over 85 percent of the people of Indian origin in the country.
London Edexcel examination board runs London O' level Tamil examination. I
set the paper for this examination. There is talk that they are going to
close Punjabi and Hindi around 2008. I am sure Tamil will follow this. The
No: students taking Tamil and other community languages are falling down
as well. Not economical for them to run the examinations.Good news there is another examination section is formed called Cambridge ASSET examination board. There they are promote Community languages around 20 languages in which Tamil is one of them. Pl visit http://www.scilt. stir.ac.uk/ Other_stats/ communitylanguag esexaminformatio n.htm Tamil is available from Sept. 2006 But now it is postponed for March 2007. There are 9 levels in Tamil. First 2 levels are available for examination from March 2007. I am one of the examiners. Following is a very disturbing report on the recent decision of venerable Cambridge University of UK to close down undergraduate classes in Sanskrit and Hindi. Fortunately there is a significant number of Tamil Diaspora living in UK (Western Europe). If this Tamil Diaspora also fail to take interest to learn Tamil, then the fate of Sanskrit may fall on Tamil as well. South Asia studies in major Universities sadly are not on top of the preferences list.
Dear Mr. Nasan I was very happy to came to know your home page www.thamizham.net. I would like to help some Swiss people to learn Tamil. I might use this as well. I have problem to understand, why you use "TA" instead of "DA" for the first letter in your first lesson. May I expect the reason from you please. So that I could let them know why. Best regards, Moorthy nagesh.uruthiramoorthy@novartis.com
